Both are ‘blogging platforms’ and do that job well, however WordPress is extremely flexible and has been stretched and deformed in every way to serve almost any function. Ghost is more strictly for article focused sites in general.
Ghost is lightweight and fast, has good built-in SEO tools and email newsletter features. It has a great and simple modern interface for writers. If you want a clean and streamlined platform for hosting content, Ghost is a great choice.
Though Ghost does offer some in the way of custom integrations, it’s not nearly as flexible as WordPress and doesn’t have nearly the same size of ecosystem. WordPress powers a huge portion of the web, and it shows with how many readily available plugins and themes there are for it.
WordPress gets a bad reputation for its security. Some of it is indeed the nature of the platform and it is just taking one out of date or badly written plugin to cause havoc, but some of it is simply because by being the most common CMS on the web it is also the most targeted. Still, if you’re looking for a site that is set and forget in terms of security, Ghost might be better. Some managed WordPress hosting platforms do a good job on making sure your WordPress instance is secure for you, which is a good option if you want to go with WordPress but are worried about security.
While we mentioned that Ghost does feature built-in SEO tools above, you might find that WordPress is more flexible for SEO if you’re an advanced user. Though to get truly good SEO features for WordPress you need to install plugins or tweak under the hood yourself, it’s much easier to accomplish some SEO things on WordPress.
Performance-wise, Ghost wins hands-down. WordPress is much more bulky and you’ll need to do more to make sure it’s fast. There’s a lot of options out there to make up the difference. You’ll find a lot of optimization plugins for WordPress, including plugins that generate your WordPress site as a static site.
Both have paid managed hosting options but offer the platform itself for free if you want to self-host. WordPress is simpler to set up on your own and its ubiquity means there are a lot of education resources available as well as things like one-click installs from server providers. Once you get it set up (or if you choose managed hosting), Ghost is much easier for a novice to use.
Overall, if you want a simple site for publishing or need bundled features like SEO without installing 3rd party plugins that could be security risks, Ghost is the right choice. If you need something outside of the blogging/publishing use case like an eCommerce site, WordPress is usually better.
In terms of your eCommerce tool-belt, Ghost is better suited as a marketing tool. You can easily publish content, have an email newsletter, and decent SEO out of the box. Typically, you’d want to use Ghost to market a product, and a separate platform to actually sell said product.
There are some supported integrations to make selling products directly on Ghost possible. You can embed a PayPal Buy Now button, for example. There are also Stripe, Shopify, Snipcart, and Bigcommerce integrations that do a similar thing.
Though it’s not as powerful as something like WooCommerce for WordPress, it’s good enough to sell a single product directly from a page if the user doesn’t need a cart or to browse a large catalog of products. Instead, you link them through a buy button to your eCommerce store hosted on another platform.
Another option is to simply have a products page link at the top, and that page is on your eCommerce platform. That may seem silly, but Ghost does excel for content based marketing. If you’re looking to convert people from rich content or descriptive writeups about your products, running two platforms side by side is not a bad solution.
